Today is the day for the now annual charity drive known as Extra-Life. It is a 24 hour gaming marathon designed to raise money and awareness for children’s cancer research. The gaming community has come out in full force to support the marathon with big sponsors including G4tv, Sony, Reddit, several game developers, and many gaming sites. All of the money earned goes to a Children’s Miracle Network hospital of your choosing. You can go local or choose any of the 170 hospitals in the network. Many sites and individuals live-stream the event all day and there are several gaming events scheduled throughout. Unfortunately I didn’t get signed up this year but there are many players and teams to donate to. Anyone can check it out at extra-life.org

So you bought that hot, new RPG that everyone has been talking about; you get it home and put it in your console of choice, and boot it up. The first thing you do is talk to the person in front of you, or are forced to talk to them; then you have to follow them or go talk to someone else. When you finally find your way to the next person, they don’t know you so they don’t trust you, or they have some crisis that only you can take care of. It is a long line of doing one thing in order to do this other thing.
Star Wars: The Old Republic

Last week I was invited to join the public beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic. I have been anticipating this for a few years now, being a fan of the Star Wars universe, including the movies and previous games such as Battlefront 2. Bioware is a developer with a good pedigree of narrative driven games. I feel they fit in nicely with LucasArts and will tell a very intriguing story. The game allows you to choose whether you want to be on the Republic side or on the Sith side of an ancient war between the factions. It is an intriguing concept and will be a fun game to try out when it releases later this month. For now though I can tell you what I thought about the beta and what I played so far. Hit the more tab to see what I thought about the beta. (more…)

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Watchful Penguin clan. Last weekend some of us went to Fort Collins, Colorado to see a band that one of our friends plays guitar in called Take to the Oars. @taketotheoarsCO
They were playing a c.d. release party for a band from Fort Collins called Post Paradise.
